Mango
Aid students throughout their busy day with healthy snacking.
February - March 2023 08 Weeks
Project Summary
San Francisco State University (SFSU) is a big commuter school, and the students live busy lives. Mango was created to help students feel satisfied while knowing that the snack they are eating is healthy and made to be eaten on the go.
Project Objective
Create a healthy snacking solution.
Make the snack for commuters and people on the go.
Appeal visually to SFSU students.
The Challenge
Mango’s main goal was to help students eat even when their schedules did not allow for time to rest. Students at SFSU may work outside of school, commute long distances, and take many classes. Students’ may care less about the quality and quantity of food they are intaking when they have many other responsibilities and priorities. Mango needed to find a way for the packaging to be travel-safe and resealable. Also, the snack had to be tasty while providing more health benefits than other snacks at SFSU. Since Mango is a new brand, the packaging must be alluring, or students would not be drawn towards it.
Target Audience
SFSU students with busy schedules or who commute
Approach
Some of the research that took place was creating questionaries that would be given to a multitude of SFSU students. This was done to figure out the current lifestyle a SFSU student lives and to evaluate Mango as a snack. Also, researching the current snacks available to students on campus and analysing the branding and packaging.
Findings
Many students work jobs and sometimes multiple jobs outside of SFSU.
The current snacks on campus are popular brands that are not focused on health.
A lot of students like to snack during free time or while working.
Process
At the beginning of the project, I started with creating a bunch of sketches where I would think of different ideas and packaging based on the idea of creating a healthy snack for SFSU students. This was done with the help of creating a persona, which would aid me in figuring out what decisions I would make. I would also visit parts of campus where snacks were sold to determine what the school offered students. After brainstorming, I figured out the direction I wanted to go for the project, which was a dried mango snack. I thought I could play a pun with the name mango with an emphasis on “go” because it’s a snack for on-the-go eating.
Throughout this project’s beginning, I would discuss my ideas with my peers about my thoughts. The next part of this project was to figure out what SFSU students’ lives were like. I created a questionnaire that I had other students answer. This influenced how the packaging and snack would be. Next was the iteration phase, where I would take my idea of Mango and refine it. After the packaging was almost done, I created another questionnaire, asking users if Mango as a brand would reach its objective. Then, I would refine the snack even more using the feedback until the final product.
