Easy Emergency Pack

Supporting you through any emergency.

November 2023 04 Weeks

Project Summary

Create a product for an issue and design it based on the design framework (designing for happiness, engagement, etc.).

Project Objective

  • All of the design framework is implemented while developing the product.

  • Have a consistent system that can be used for future tea flavors.

The Challenge

Creating a fully developed and cohesive product with limited time constraints. The product needs to be easy for people to understand and use under any circumstance.

Target Audience

SFSU students and college students who moved away from home or live in the dorms.

Research

Asked SFSU students who live in the dorms if they had personal emergency packs through surveys. Also looked through the SFSU website to see if there was any information regarding emergency packs. Amazon and other websites were viewed to see what the market of emergency packs was like: the price range, size/form, what they included, and more.

Findings

  • SFSU students did not have personal emergency packs.

  • The SFSU website showed lists of things that should be purchased to create your own. Also some instructions on what to do in certain emergencies along with some resources.

Final Storyboard

Design Framework

Designing for happiness:

EEP can give users happiness with the small details that are throughout the product. For example, with the rings attached to the zippers for easy access.

Designing to thrive:

EEP can help the user thrive be knowing they are well supported in case of an emergency. With EEP the user can be prepared to help themselves and others in need.

Designing for engagement:

EEP is engaging due to the way it is packaged, the packaging pouches are stacked on top of one another. Thus when one opens the pack it will cause the person to take all the pouches out to view all the contents.

Designing for surprise:

EEP can be surprising with the vibrant colors of the packaging pouch. When opening the bag one can see all the colorful pouches that makes it easily recognizable to the user.

Designing for liveliness:

EEP has a sense of liveliness with the bright red color of the bag to grab the user’s attention. The red is consistent throughout the bag, giving energy.

Designing for cuteness:

EEP was designed to look harmless and inviting to the users. Each of the packaging pouches includes a small symbol to represent the inside contents. The symbol along with the bright colors can bring a sense of cuteness to the user.

Designing for serendipity:

EEP may bring the user serendipity due to the labeling system, color coding, or symbols that make it easy for first time users.

Designing for reassurance:

EEP reassures the user with it’s durable materials and instructions. It also contains a list that clearly states what is inside each packaging pouch. Reassurance also comes from knowing that EEP has everything one would need.

Final Results of the Survey

The survey regarding Easy Emergency Pack was created to ask how prepared they are in case of an emergency

One of the questions that were asked was if they had an emergency pack that was readily available. The results show that most people do not have an emergency pack and are not prepared.

Another question asked if the user were to have an Easy Emergency Pack, where would they put it? People said that they would keep it in their room or closet.

In the survey, people stated that the Easy Emergency Pack would be useful during an emergency.

69% of people do not have an emergency pack available.

23% of people are unsure if they have an emergency pack available.

08% of people have an emergency pack available.

Process

The beginning of this project included finding and researching the design situation.

DESIGN SITUATION -

College students, especially those who move away, do not prepare for situations like natural disasters and accidents. Most people do not have emergency packs/kits, and the SFSU dorms do not provide them. Natural disasters like floods, wildfires, earthquakes, landslides, and droughts are the most common in the Bay Area. Being unprepared can have dire consequences and, in the worst-case scenario, can cost someone’s life.

Current emergency packs/kits available online range from prices like $40 to $300 or more. Also, many of them have items that are not allowed in the dorms.

The initial sketches included early versions of the product, Easy Emergency Pack, and the storyboard.
